Search engine optimization (SEO) is a valuable tool for your marketing plan. Some marketing experts say it is the most important thing you can do when it comes to online marketing. Using SEO properly will help get your page ranked high in search results and get your business in front of consumers who are in the buying process. In short, SEO allows you to communicate with the engines so they can recommend your site to users who are searching for what you offer.

Search engines have been changing the algorithm they use to rank content so the way businesses use search engine optimization has changed as well. The engines are now looking for fresh, relevant content rather than just certain keywords that are repeated over and over again.

There are four tips to use search engine optimization that will get your content noticed and increase the visibility of your business.

1. What Search Engines Want – The search engines are set up to deliver the most relevant content and websites to their users. To do this this they weigh different aspects of your website. They will examine the content, headlines and descriptions to see how current and relevant it is. Then they will determine the authority of your site. This is determined by the number of links to your site from “authoritative” sites. The more sites that link to your content the more authority you have.

2. What Search Engines Don’t Want – The search engine spiders are getting smarter and it is becoming harder to try to trick them or game the system. Early methods of search engine optimization consisted of repeating keywords throughout the text (keyword stuffing) whether it made sense or not. That no longer works. Buying links to your website does not work, either. You want to build links to your site organically.

3. Optimize For Multiple Channels – Your keyword strategy should not end at your website. Your search engine optimization tactics should expand to social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others. Use the same keywords on social media that you use on your website.

4. Don’t Forget Mobile – More and more searches are happening on mobile devices, whether they be smartphones or tablets. Make sure your search engine optimization strategy takes advantage of this. If your business primarily operates in a particular city or region, use that name in some of your SEO keywords. You also want to make sure your site is easily viewed on the smaller screens of mobile devices.
