What makes a great blog post? Of course, you need a thoughtful topic – but never underestimate the power of presentation. If you’re new to blogging, you might feel a bit lost when it comes to structuring your blog posts. Don’t worry! This post will teach you how to create a great blog post that your visitors will want to read and share.

Write about something your audience wants to read

Finding a topic for a blog post might seem like a daunting task, but it does not have to be. To find a topic for our blog you look at other websites in your market and see what they’ve recently posted; don’t copy what they’ve written, but take an idea or a concept and put your unique spin on it. See what’s trending in the news and write about that or how some bit of recent news is impacting your customers. Lastly, simply ask your customers or readers.

Start with a catchy headline

You’ve probably heard that the headline is the most important part of every blog post. In this case, you heard right! Boring headlines won’t bring in many readers, even if your content is otherwise good. Coming up with a solid headline isn’t as difficult as it might seem. Identify your main point, and then get a little creative with it. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

If you cannot come up with something catchy, here are some additional headline ideas (just fill in the blanks):

Keep readers interested in the introduction

Now that you have their attention, don’t let up! Tell your readers WHY they should keep reading. People are busy, so it pays to be upfront about what you have to offer. Like selling your product or service, focus on the benefits upfront, then delve into the technical details.

Spice up the body of your content

Here’s where you deliver what you promised, so make it good! Don’t intimidate your readers with large chunks of text. Every blog post should be easy to scan, which means you need the following:

  • Meaningful sub headlines
  • Key points in bold
  • Lists and bullet points
  • Images and visual interest

Relevant images can make your post more engaging and interesting to your readers. For best results, select 2-3 high quality images that relate to your topic. Several websites offer free and paid images that will enhance your blogs posts.The Commons on Flickr is a great place to get started with good quality, free pictures.

Sprinkle in some relevant keywords

You need to identify a keyword or few that your blog should emphasize. These keywords are of course what readers type into Google to find what they’re searching for. To know what keywords are popular, head on over to Google’s Keyword Planner and start researching.

You don’t have to go overboard or “stuff” your posts with keywords – use them in a natural way, but it is good to use keywords your audience and customers are searching for.

Don’t forget to include your keywords in the image alt-tags, in your headline and sub headlines, your blog title, and your blog’s meta description.

Link to other sources

Make your posts easy to share

Don’t forget to close

Always include a call-to-action at the end of your blog post. What do you want people to do next? It can be something as simple as leaving a comment. If the reader got all the way to the end of your blog post, you don’t want to leave them hanging.
